Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a potent lymphoid cell growth factor which affects B-lymphocytes, T-lymphocytes and hybridoma cells. It will also affect cytotoxic T-cells in combination with other factors such as IL-2 and g-interferon. Human IL-6 is a 20.9 kDa protein containing 184 amino acid residues.

FUNCTION:IL-6 is a cytokine with a wide variety of biological functions: it plays an essential role in the final differentiation of B-cells into Ig-secreting cells, it induces myeloma and plasmacytoma growth, it induces nerve cells differentiation, in hepatocytes it induces acute phase reactants. SUBCELLULAR LOCATION:Secreted. PTM:N- and O-glycosylated. Ref.14
Polymorphism Genetic variations in IL6 may be correlated with bone mineral density (BMD). Low BMD is a risk factor for osteoporotic fracture. Osteoporosis is characterized by reduced bone mineral density, disrutption of bone microarchitecture, and the alteration of the amount and variety of non-collagenous proteins in bone. Osteoporotic bones are more at risk of fracture. INVOLVEMENT IN DISEASE:Genetic variations in IL6 are associated with susceptibility to systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis [MIM:604302]. Systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is juvenile chronic arthritis associated with severe, debilitating, extraarticular features, and occasionally fatal complications. Despite medical treatment, many children still experience early joint destruction, necessitating surgical replacement.
At least 1 polymorphism in the IL6 gene renders HIV-infected men susceptible to Kaposi sarcoma [MIM:148000]. Kaposi sarcoma is a sarcoma of spindle cells mixed with angiomatous tissue. A relatively rare malignant skin tumor that results in multifocal purplish coloured papules or plaques that eventually form nodules. Most commonly seen in patients who suffer from AIDS. SEQUENCE SIMILARITIES:Belongs to the IL-6 superfamily.

Usage Statement
Unless otherwise stated in our catalog or other company documentation accompanying the product(s), our products are intended for research use only and are not to be used for any other purpose, which includes but is not limited to, unauthorized commercial uses, in vitro diagnostic uses, ex vivo or in vivo therapeutic uses or any type of consumption or application to humans or animals.
Storage and Shipping Information
Storage Conditions
Stable for 1 year at -20ºC from date of receipt.
Handling Recommendations: Upon receipt, and prior to removing the cap, centrifuge the vial and gently mix the solution. Aliquot into microcentrifuge tubes and store at -20°C. Avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles, which may damage IgG and affect product performance. Note: Variability in freezer temperatures below -20°C may cause glycerol containing solutions to become frozen during storage.
