R-phycoerythrin (RPE) can be coupled to proteins, such as antibodies, to allow their detection by fluorescence microscopy or flow cytometry. A simple and efficient alternative to the conventional covalent coupling of RPE to antibodies is the formation of a tetrameric antibody complexes consisting of a primary mouse IgG1 antibody cross linked to a mouse anti-RPE antibody via rat anti-mouse Fc antibody.
