Ready-to use system: highly pure cells, superior cell morphology and post-thaw viability, and excellent cell expansion. With GIBCO® Rat Primary Cortical Astrocytes, we offer neuroscience researchers an ideal, ready-to-use substitute to freshly isolated astrocytes. The cells are isolated from the cortex of Sprague-Dawley at day E19 of gestation and passage once before cryopreservation. Each vial contains 1 × 106 cells/ml viable cells (post-thaw). Unlike the other commercially available primary rat astrocytes that either yield about 50% post-thaw viability or form aggregates upon thawing, Gibco® Rat Primary Cortical Astrocytes consistently give 70% or more post-thaw viability. Astrocytes are the largest and most numerous neuroglial cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Astrocytes are known to regulate the extracellular ionic and chemical environment, respond to CNS injury, and play a fundamental role in the pathogenesis of ischemic neuronal death. In addition, astrocytes have been frequently used in the study of neuroglial interactions, blood brain barrier, stroke and other disease models. All these make astrocytes valuable source in cell biology studies, in animal model development and transplantation, and potentially in cell therapy applications.
