The EGF—Alexa Fluor 488 streptavidin complex is a bright, green-fluorescent EGF probe (excitation/emission ~495/519 nm) that is formed by biotinylating EGF at the N-terminal amino acid and then linking the biotinylated EGF to Alexa Fluor 488 streptavidin. We have found that this complex results in labeling that is approximately tenfold more fluorescent than can be achieved with fluorescein EGF. Because Alexa Fluor 488 dye is spectrally similar to fluorescein, it can be used with the filters and settings appropriate for fluorescein EGF.
