The nitric oxide detector, 2,3-diaminonaphthalene reacts with the nitrosonium cation that forms spontaneously from NO to form the fluorescent product 1H-naphthotriazole, excitation/emission maxima ~365/415 nm. The dimly fluorescent aromatic diamine, 2,3-diaminonapthalene may also be useful for detection of ketones and alpha-keto acids through formation of highly fluorescent heterocycles.
