Description: The human Osteoprotegerin Instant ELISA is an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for the quantitative detection of osteoprotegerin levels in cell culture supernatants, serum and plasma.. The human Osteoprotegerin Instant ELISA is for research use only. Not for diagnostic or therapeutic procedures.
Osteoprotegerin (OPG) is a member of the TNF receptor family expressed by osteoblasts. OPG has documented effects on the regulation of bone metabolism. It inhibits bone resorption and binds with strong affinity to its ligand RANKL, thereby preventing RANKL from binding its receptor RANK. This system is regulated by calcium-modifying hormones and the humoral factors. Modulation of the RANKL/RANK/OPG system in animal results in a skeletal and vascular phenotype. OPG also has a role in the regulation of the immune response regulating the interactions between T cells and DCs acting as decoy receptor.
A number of clinical implications of the osteoprotegerin/RANKL/RANK system for bone and vascular diseases have been described. Most importantly the significance of the OPG has been shown in osteoporosis, chronic inflammatory disorders, malignant tumors. The RANKL/OPG imbalance plays a role in multiple myeloma Serum levels are further relevantly changed in inflammatory arthritis and rheumatoid inflammation in juvenile Paget?s disease.
