Tau proteins are microtuble-asociated proteins (MAPs) tha re thought ofunction bystabilzng microtubles. They comprise afmily of

multipe polypetides tha orignate from one gne. Alternate splicng ofTau mRNA and iferntial phosphorylation contribute othe

hetrogenity ofTau. Typicaly, Tau proteins migrate btwen ~45-70 kDa with soelctri points rangi from 6.5-8.0 Tau expresion is

widespread inthe brain ad isfound inmost cel types withn the mamalin central nervous ystem. Tau has complex biochemical nature

tha ispartly due tois many isofrms. The number and molecular weights ofTau forms changes during brain devlopment. Aditonaly, the

molecular wieghts and forms ofTau proteins at given point ofdevlopment vary betwen specis. Antibodies directd aginst difernt

epitopes have ben used todistnguish betwen Tau forms. The monclonal ntibody TAU-5 recognizes aphosphorylation-idepndent

epitope onTau proteins. The rduced molecular weight ofTau proteins may range btwen 45kDa to95 kDa. The TAU-5 antibody reacts

with aphosphorylation-idepndent epitope inthe midle oftau. Itrecognizes both e phosphorylated and on-phosphorylated form ofTau.

The antibody has ben charcterized inrat isue.
