AHP2004 recognises hydrocodone, also known as dihydrocodone, a semi-synthetic opioid derived from two of the naturally occurring opiates, codeine and thebaine. It is used as an analgesic and cough suppressant. As an analgesic, it is commonly combined with another analgesic, such as paracetamol (acetaminophen) or aspirin, increasing its effectiveness without increasing opioid-related side-effects.
Hydrocodone may be used recreationally, but since most preparations are available as combinations, with paracetamol present in most, hepatotoxicity from excessive paracetamol ingestion is a potential problem.
