AHP1951 recognises Nitrazepam, a long-acting benzodiazepine drug most often used to treat short-term insomnia. It is also used for the treatment of seizures.
The benzodiazepines are a group of over 20 structurally related central nervous depressant drugs. They are widely prescribed for the treatment of anxiety, stress and insomnia. They are also used as pre-medication, for the induction of general anaesthesia and for treatment of alcohol withdrawal, epileptic seizures and muscle spasms.
Benzodiazepines are potentially addictive and are taken for their mood-altering properties. They are also used to counteract the after-effects of stimulant drugs such as opiates, ecstasy and amphetamines, and are known as “downers”. Benzodiazepines by themselves, although highly addictive, are relatively safe and most cases of overdose and death occur when the drug is taken in combination with other drugs or alcohol.
