AHP1929 recognises propoxyphene, a synthetic opiate with mild analgesic properties, and its metabolite norpropoxyphene. Propoxyphene is sometimes combined with paracetamol or aspirin. It is particularly used for patients who cannot easily metabolise codeine. The drug is prone to abuse and when associated with other drugs or alcohol can be very toxic, causing a large number of fatalities. The therapeutic index of the drug is relatively small, meaning that even small overdosing can be fatal. Since the drug also has limited effectiveness, its use is decreasing in several countries. Norpropoxyphene is responsible for many of the side effects and may accumulate in the body since it has a very long half-life.
