AHP1775 recognised human Neuronal Apoptosis Inhibitory Protein (NAIP) also known as BIRC1, a 1406 amino acid intracellular protein belonging to the IAP family.
NAIP functions in the prevention of neuron apoptosis induced by various signals. It was the first human inhibitor of apoptosis protein (IAP) identified and was discovered by its association with the neurodegenerative disorder spinal muscular atrophy. NAIP, unlike other IAPs, requires ATP to bind caspase-9 and is not inhibited by the IAP-inhibiting molecule Smac/DIABLO, this suggests that NAIP is unique among the IAPs in its regulation of activity.
NAIP is expressed in motor, but not sensory neurons, it is also found in the liver, placenta, and to a lesser extent, spinal cord.
