AHP1741 detects an epitope within the internal region of human CD49d, a 150kD protein also known as integrin alpha 4 (ITGA4). Integrins are integral cell-surface proteins composed of an alpha chain and a beta chain. CD49d associates with CD29 (ITGB1) and ITGB7, to form VLA-4 (very late antigen-4), and a4ß7 integrin respectively.
VLA-4 is expressed on lymphocytes, monocytes, mast cells, macrophages, basophils and eosinophils, and has key roles in inflammation, cellular adhesion and cellular activation. a4ß7 is expressed mainly on lymphocytes, and plays a key role in lymphocyte recruitment to sites of inflammation.
