AHP1554 recognises bovine synapsin I, a neuronal phosphoprotein that coats synaptic vesicles and binds to the cytoskeleton. Synapsins are involved in the regulation of the release of synaptic vesicles and therefore the release of neurotransmitters. The interactions of the protein with actin filaments and synaptic vesicle are regulated by phosphorylation.

Antiserum to Synapsin I was raised by repeated immunisation of rabbits with highly purified antigen. Purified IgG was prepared from whole serum by affinity chromatography.
