AHP1058 detects an epitope within the internal region of Caveolin1 (Cav1). Cav1 is a 21kD scaffolding protein which is the main component of the caveolae plasma membranes found in most cell types. Two isoforms (alpha and beta) are encoded by a single transcript from this gene.
Cav1 is highly expressed in terminally differentiated or quiescent cells, suggesting a possible role for Cav1 as a negative regulator of cell proliferation.
Cav1 has been implicated in the pathogenesis of oncogenic cell transformation, tumorigenesis, and metastasis and functions as a “tumour and/or metastasis-modifying gene”. For example Cav1 normally functions as a negative regulator of cell transformation and mammary tumorigenesis, whilst in prostate cancers Cav1 may function as a tumour promoter.
