AAM78 specifically recognises mouse Lipocalin-2 (Lcn2), otherwise known as Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), a secreted glycoprotein and member of the Lipocalin family, expressed in the uterus, lungs, spleen and epididymis, which is implicated in innate immunity and apoptosis.
Members of the lipocalin family act as protein transporters, through the binding of small lipophilic substances in the hydrophobic core. Studies in mice have confirmed the important role of Lcn2 in the innate immune response, by binding to bacterial iron-containing siderophores, limiting bacterial growth.
