Galectin-3 is a α-galactoside binding lectin mainly present in the cytoplasm, but it can also be present in the nucleus or be secreted. It has high affinity for polylactosamine glycans and binds to extracellular matrix components and cell surface adhesion molecules. It has been implicated in immune regulation, development, neoplastic transformation and metastasis.
