MCA5710G recognises Amphetamine, a synthetic psychostimulant drug. It causes alertness, an increase in the ability to concentrate, decreased fatigue and decreased appetite. It acts by increasing levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain and increasing euphoria. Medically it may be used to treat daytime drowsiness, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in children and traumatic brain injury.
Amphetamine may be used recreationally, where tolerance can develop rapidly, leading to psychological addiction. Chronic abuse can lead to weight loss, hallucinations and paranoid psychosis. Overdose may result in agitation, hyperthermia, convulsion, coma and cardiac and respiratory failure.
Amphetamine may also be used as a performance-enhancer. Students may take it as a study aid, since it increases energy levels, concentration and motivation. It may also be taken by athletes to increase energy levels. Its use during strenuous physical activity, especially when combined with alcohol, is extremely dangerous.
