0300-0020 is specific for Bcl-2, a 25 kDa integral outer mitochondrial membrane protein that blocks apoptotic death in a variety of cell systems. Bcl-2 regulates cell death by controlling the mitochondrial membrane permeability. It inhibits caspase activity either by preventing the release of cytochrome c from the mitochondria and/or by binding to the apoptosis-activating factor (apaf-1). Bcl-2 is antiproliferative by facilitating G0entry.
Constitutive expression of Bcl-2 is thought to be the cause of follicular lymphoma, also known as type II chronic lymphatic leukaemia. Bcl-2 mutations have also been found in Non-Hodgkin Lymphomas.
