UCP4 facilitates the dissipation of heat across the inner mitochondrial membrane, by leaking protons across the membrane and uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation from ATP synthesis. UCP4 is understood to be involved in thermoregulatory heat production and metabolism in brain.
