Mycobacterium tuberculosis is an acid-fast, gram-positive bacteria that is the most common cause of tuberculosis. On infection M. tuberculosis secretes a number of proteins that are targeted by the hosts immune response. Among these is the species specific 38 kDA phosphate transport protein that has been suggested as a marker for multibacillary disease.
